BUnique Volunteer Week took place

Bournemouth University societies teamed up with The Hub for a week between February 20 and 26, in first-ever special event to celebrate achievements and increase student participation.

BUnique Volunteer Week incorporated BUnique Week with Volunteer Week. It highlighted the importance of having something unique and different on student CVs as applying for a job is very competitive these days.

Student representatives expressed the significance of showing the involvement in something other than classes and grades, such as volunteering for charity or being a member of a society.

Leroy Scott, Democracy Officer at Bournemouth University Student Union (SUBU) said: “The hub was very active throughout the week making us aware of the opportunities available for students and also got a lot of interest. We held a “volunteer for five minutes” on Wednesday which involved students giving us a little of their time to help out and create cards.”

He added: “It gave them an introduction as to what volunteer opportunities are available to students and how it can have a positive on impact, not only on their CVs, but on the lives oh those they help.”

Nicky Kay, a local entrepreneur for FitKid Ltd, and Hannah Cooke from Young Enterprise, made a special appearance at the event.

Nicky Kay has been volunteering since she was 12 years old and is now planning to take her business globally. She said: “I know without the experience I gained from volunteering I would not be where I am today.”

A number of societies were involved with the week’s event. Dance societies, such as street-dance, break-dance and ballroom dance societies, gave performance at the university generating big crowds.
