The event, which coincides with International Women’s Day, is calling on women not to take part in paid or unpaid work for the day, to avoid spending money and to wear red in solidarity.

“The best way to make it heard is to strike”

Event organiser Jennifer Abbene said: “Women are a disenfranchised gender, on both sides of the Atlantic. The best way to make it heard is to strike.

“Strike all corporate businesses – if you need to buy something on International Women’s Day, do it from a local business and by a woman. Until these corporate practices are stopped,  there will always be the wage gap, there will always be the inferiority that we have been shown in society.”

“By taking part I hope for more recognition of the value of women’s labour and place in society”

The strike, expected to take place in more than 30 countries, aims to raise awareness over issues including economic inequality, reproductive rights and ending violence against women.

Event co-founder Lauren Smallcalder said: “I think it is important for women local to the area to have an opportunity to take part.

“Women’s work is frequently underpaid and undervalued, or not paid at all in the case of many of the caregiving and housekeeping roles many women have. By taking part I hope for more recognition of the value of women’s labour and place in society.”

The strike will be taking place in Bournemouth Square at 5pm.
