Homeless bus shelter renovation gets underway

The conversion of a double decker bus into a homeless shelter is now taking place, with hopes to be finished within the next 4-8 weeks.

Go South Coast donated the double decker bus to the Bus Shelter Dorset charity and the restoration is intended to include up to 20 beds for both male and female rough sleepers.

Natalie Joyce, a volunteer for the project, explains a bit more about the renovation: “The double decker bus is currently being stored at Weymouth Football Club whilst the conversion takes place.  Our conversion team are volunteers and they are now working on the bus 7 days a week!

“We hope that the bus will be complete within 4- 8 weeks.”

While Go South Coast donated the bus, the local community and even national businesses have got involved to help with other necessities for the shelter: “The local community have been very supportive and we are grateful for the donations that we have received.  Local and National businesses have also supported us with donations of building materials and equipment for the bus and it’s trailer, which will house the shower, kitchen and toilet.”

The homeless bus shelter is being modelled on a similar successful project which is running on the Isle of Wight.
