Twin Sails Bridge opens for public

Poole’s new Twin Sails Bridge opened for the pubic to walk across after its first lifting on Saturday, 26th February.

Mayor of Poole, Cllr Graham Wilson, cut the ribbon and led the first group of invited guests and council members across the bridge. Then, the general public followed and got a close-up view of the new bridge.

The Twin Sails Bridge opened for traffic use today.

Cllr Graham Wilson, said: “With previously built Poole Bridge nearing its 85th birthday we wanted to celebrate both the history and the future of the town. We hope this event will be another chapter in Poole’s rich history.”

Rotary Club of Poole offered special certificates to commemorate the event for a minimum of £2 in aid of the local charities.

Kate Endicott, Rotary money raiser, said: “We are here all day to give out certificates. It’s a lovely souvenir supporting local charities. We hope that with the sun coming out, we are going to have a fantastic day.”

The official opening of the bridge will take place on 9 March 2012. The event will be held on the former power station site in Hamworthy and then will continue with music and entertainment on Poole Quay. The night will end with a firework display at 9 PM.

The Twin Sail Bridge connects Poole and Hamworthy. The bridge design is composed out of two triangular shaped lifting leaves that are symbolising the sails of a yacht. The completion took 20 months and cost £37m.
