Bournemouth Council considers taxi fare rises

Kevin Holmes, representative of Bournemouth Taxi Trade Association, requested that the proposal be heard at the meeting on Thursday.

The changes would apply to all Hackney Carriages in Bournemouth. These taxis are yellow, with a white stripe down the side. The law allows the Council to fix the fares within a district for all Hackney Carriages.

The proposed changes would see a 2.25% increase in taxi fares. This means that for a three-mile journey between the hours of 6.30am and midnight, the fare would rise to £9.43.

According to the Department for Transport, the number of taxi and private hire vehicles in England reached record level last year. 285,400 vehicles were licensed in 2018, up 1.7% from 2017. In the south-west, this increase was 3.8%.

The Council’s decision is expected soon after the meeting. If approved, the changes will come into effect on 1 April 2019.
