Weymouth fans upbeat despite FA Cup exit

The Terras were knocked out in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the historic cup competition after a 2-1 defeat to Dover Athletic on Saturday but fans were quick to not let the result put a dampener on their season so far.

“It’s been a terrific start to the season” said Weymouth fan Jack Matthews.

“100 percent disappointed to be out (of the FA Cup) but it was a real quality performance by the lads. Dover showed why they’re the league above and had the legs on us by the final ten minutes.”

Weymouth had led the tie after a Jake McCarthy goal in the 78th minute, but it took just four minutes for Dover to find an equaliser.

The National League side then compiled Weymouth’s misery further when they scored a late winner, with The Terras just three minutes from a replay and a place in the hat for the First Round draw.

“When they scored the winner, my heart sank for the first-time watching football in years” said Matthews.

Fellow Weymouth fan Mark Mellon said that despite his initial disappointment, the cup exit may be a blessing in disguise.

“We’re in a good run of form in the league. They’re doing so much better than first thought and perhaps there’s no distractions now.”

Season expectations

Weymouth currently sit 6th and in the play-off places in the National League South, boasting one of the best defensive records in the league. Due to this impressive start, fans are hopeful of more than just avoiding relegation.

“With it being the first time back in the second tier of non-league football in ten years and some tough teams in it at the start of the season I would have been happy with just surviving” said Matthews.

“However, after the start the management and players have made, mid-table seems certain so I think mid-table, maybe touching the play-offs, would be a successful year.”

Mellon concurred with Matthews: “If you asked me at the start, I’d have definitely said stay up, mid-table a bonus. Now I’d take mid-table with play-offs as a bonus”.

Weymouth’s next fixture is at home to Braintree Town in the National League South this Saturday.
