Arts by the Sea to return in 2018

Arts by the Sea festival is due to return for the next four years as the organisers secure ongoing funding.

Bournemouth erupted in lights and colour over the last week as Arts by the Sea brought music, theatre, dance and more to the town.

Funding secured for 2018

This year, the Arts by the Sea organisers have successfully secured further funding for the festival.

Andrea Francis, the festival director, told The Breaker that the funding “means we can see things through on a longer term scale

“We had an open call for commissions, where we set aside money for some artists to create new work for the festival. […] We got about 50 applicants but could only pick 3”.

Running from 14th to 21st of October, Arts by the Sea brought a variety of performances and installations to the town, promoting arts, culture, and the environment to residents and visitors.

The festival, which started seven years ago, hosted over 50 events across Bournemouth and has developed to become environmentally conscious with this year’s theme “Plastic Beach”.

Residents and visitors came in numbers to see the finale as this year’s festival came to a close, despite Bournemouth being battered by Storm Brian.

Sense of Unity, a collaboration between German puppeteers Dundu and UK percussion group Worldbeaters closed the event, as the performers paraded through Bournemouth centre.

Other events throughout the festival included music performances organised by Sofar Sounds, world famous theatrical water performance by Avanti Display, and more.
