Youth centres in Weymouth have been awarded £3m to help develop their facilities and build a new youth centre.

The STEPS club and the Dorset Youth Association will use the government’s grant from the MyPlace programme to refurbish Weymouth’s Outdoor Education centre and build a a new youth centre on the old STEPS site.

Weymouth youths played a leading role in securing the grant, they worked hard with architects to write and develop plans for the Union and the programme.

The new STEPS club will contain a club area, sports hall and a performing arts area as well as an IT suite and a film production studio with a working café, which will be run by young people.

Toni Coombs, cabinet member for Children’s Services said: “This is an exciting project and will provide a centre for all the young people of Weymouth to access support and activities.

“The long opening hours will enable them to use this new centre at times that suit them.

“We are looking forward to seeing the finished building and realising the dreams of the young people involved in the project.”

The new STEPS club will officially open in early 2013.
