Use your voice

BU to mark University Mental Health Day

The national event aims to raise awareness about mental health issues in students. It recognises the particular stresses and pressures that university life can bring.

This year focuses on the power of using your voice. Student Minds is encouraging students to share their stories and use their experiences to shape the future of mental health.

Bournemouth University is running several events in support of the day.

The Student’s Union has organised ‘wellfest’ – featuring therapy dogs, massages and competitions – while a health and wellbeing referral drop in will be running from 10am to 4pm in the Student Centre.

University Music will also be hosting several events, and SportBU are offering free classes, such as Zumba and Yoga, to staff and students.

Mental illness on the rise

Student mental health has been a particularly prominent issue in recent years, notably after the suicide of 11 students in 18 months at the University of Bristol.

The number of UK freshers declaring mental health problems on arrival at university has risen by 73% in four years.

Student Minds is working to help young people look after their mental health, support others and inspire change.

The charity operates in 88 universities across the UK, running support groups on eating difficulties, low mood and mental health in sport.
