Bournemouth restaurants feel the brunt of economic meltdown

Restaurants are facing quiet days and finding means to fight the pinch of recession.

Restaurants in Bournemouth are employing different ways to survive the storm while fast food joints are still enjoying a good number of customers.

Katie Sutton, manager of Urban Reef in Boscombe, said: “Business has been quieter for us, especially in the winter months. But we’re hoping it will pick up a little now that the sun is shining. We do daily comparisons of our figures year on year to ensure we’re doing all we can to minimise the fluctuation due to the economic condition.”

Urban Reef’s prime location on the Boscombe Promenade is advantageous in the summer months. Their most popular dishes being lamb and fish and the usage of high quality ingredients leads to high prices on the menu attracting a range of customers from young professionals to retired people.

“In the quieter times we run several offers such as ‘2 courses for £12.95 and ‘buy one course and get the next one for half price’.”

Ain Udin, manager of Indian restaurant, Eastern Eye, said: “Our main customers are middle class and young people. But, there has definitely been a large drop in customers every since recession has set in.”

However, fast food joints such as KFC have not felt the brunt of recession as much as restaurants. A spokesperson for KFC, said: “Business has been stable in the recent months. We have a large number of students as well as an older crowd coming in. The most sold items on the menu include box meals such big daddy and wicked zinger.”
